Citrine
The name origin for citrine is traced back to the Latin word for lemon, namely “citrus”, which also happens to describe its colour. Natural citrines are usually of a pale yellow hue or a more golden brown colour and are actually rather scarce. Most gemstones that are made out to be citrines, are in fact heat treated smoky quartz stones or heat treated amethysts. At temperatures of 470°C amethysts turn into a pale yellow colour and at temperatures of 550°C they turn into dark yellow to a reddish brown colour. Smoky quartz turns into the typical lemon citrine colour at temperatures of around 200°C.
The popularity of these stones goes all the way back to 480 BC. They were not only used as elements of jewellery, but were also used as lucky charms. The citrine is seen to be the gem of luck and will protect its owner against evil thoughts as well as against poison.
Due to its exceptionally high level of brilliance and its incredible colour tone, it is much loved in modern day jewellery.
