Ruby
Rubies along with sapphires belong to the corundum group of gems and are amongst the world’s hardest minerals (Mohs scale 9). Its name is derived from the Latin word “rubinus”, meaning “red stone”. On the Indian continent it is also called “Ratnaraj” (“King of the gems”). The corundum has trigonal shape (six-sided prism) and its chemical composition is aluminium oxide the strong bonds of which are responsible for its high level of hardness and intense density.
It is generally assumed that rubies have been known from the Bronze Ages onward. For both Egyptians and Romans, the red colour was a symbol for fire and blood or life and love.
Its colour is a result of minute inclusions of chrome that come in varying intensities depending on the geographical origin of the deposits. Most rubies are heat treated for the purpose of colour intensification. Untreated specimens of finest quality are being sold for record sums in the jewellery market and often greatly surpass the price of comparable diamonds.
Rubies usually contain very small to medium sized inclusions. This does not mean they are of lower quality. Quite the opposite is the case. These inclusions are proof that the gem is completely natural and has not undergone any form of heat treatment like similar looking synthetic stones.
