The gemstone in green is the magical hub at the centre of this pendant. This piece of fine jewellery seems to emanate something mysterious and could well be connected to the occult – immersing yourself in it is like exploring the depths of a deep and silent lake.
Emerald
The term emerald is derived from the Greek word “smaragdus” meaning “green stone”. The first written reference for this gemstone can possibly be found in the ancient scriptures of Ptah- Hotep, vizier of Pepi I. (approx. 2300 BC.) although it is somewhat disputed as to whether it really is an emerald that is being described or just some other green stone.
Emeralds are the finest and most valuable gemstones of the beryl group. Their colour is green to yellowy-green, whereby its colour is so distinctive that it has been given the term “emerald green”. What gives emeralds their amazingly distinct colour hue are the traces of chrome that it contains. What is more, is that emeralds display a high degree of pleochroism which gives them their singularly unique bluish green – yellowy green nuances.
Emeralds almost always have small inclusions in them which are not seen as being imperfections. Among experts these are endearingly seen as being “delicate plants in a garden of green” and are therefore called “jardin” from the French for garden.
These inclusions are formed during the crystallisation process. Since emeralds are formed from metamorphic rock this enables small crystals or bubbles to be incorporated into the crystal lattice structure.
Egypt’s last pharaoh, Cleopatra, greatly valued the majestic aura of this precious stone and often adorned herself with emerald jewellery and also used them as gifts for the dignitaries of her realm.
