Demantoid
Demantoid is derived from the old German word “demant” meaning “diamond like”. Demantoids display a wide variety of green tones ranging from light green to yellowish green all the way through to a deep emerald green. One characteristic of this gemstone is its unmistakable sparkle which can even surpass that of diamond.
The fiery sparkle of gemstones is what is known as the “dispersion” of incoming light. What happens in dispersion in gems is that the various colour components of light are split up. When a demantoid is under direct light it splits the white light into a dazzling sparkling array of colour covering orange, red, yellow, green, and blue as well as even violet.
This unique gemstone was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in 1855.
Today, high quality demantoids are extremely rare and so any pieces of jewellery displaying such gems is indeed a really special piece.
