Topaz
Again there is some uncertainty as to the name derivation of topaz. It is, however, though to have been derived from the geographical site of initially found deposits on the Red Sea island of St. John which was once named Topazos. As early as 82 BC the Greek historian Cornelius Alexander Polyhistor wrote that on that specific island gems had been discovered which had the “colour of fresh oil”.
Topaz comes in varieties that are either colourless or any of the following natural colours: auburn, light blue, rose red, red, violet, or light green. The elements that lend colour to the gem are iron and chromium, the tones of which are rarely ever very intensive. Its pleochroism is dependent on its colour, and consequently, red and yellow specimens have a higher degree of pleochroism than their blue counterparts.
A further unique characteristic is that some varieties of the yellowy brown topaz start to fade when subject to long periods of direct sunlight. Obviously such conditions need to be avoided as far as possible with these gemstones.
