Iolite
Iolite’s name is made up of the two Greek words “ion” (violet) and “lithos” (stone). In mineralogical terms it is a cordierite. Iolites are found in a wide range of blue hues, whereby due to its high degree of pleochroism, it can easily be identified from other gemstones of similar colour. In one direction the iolite will present its typical blue colour and then after rotating it by 90° it appears to be light yellow or yellowy brown. This feature is singularly unique among gemstones. Iolite is not one of the commonly used gemstones in today’s jewellery and yet its scarcity in this area makes for especially attractive and exceptional pieces of jewellery.
